What is an Oral Appliance?

Schedule Your Evaluation

Everyone loves a good night’s sleep, but getting one isn’t always easy if you suffer from snoring or sleep apnea.

Dr. Majznerski of Align Orthodontics offers patients an alternative to traditional treatments for snoring and sleep apnea. Oral sleep appliance therapy has helped countless patients, including Dr. Majznerski himself.

“I have worn an oral sleep appliance for over 20 years for the treatment of sleep apnea,” Dr. Majznerski said. “When you are both the doctor and the patient, you gain valuable insights into the treatment you provide, which greatly impacts the success and predictability of treatment.”

That same success with this oral sleep appliance may be possible for you.

Deep Sleep Is Vital to Overall Health

A night of good, restful sleep is vital to our overall health. Deep sleep gives our bodies a chance to rejuvenate and reenergize after a day of activity. Disrupting that sleep, or failing to achieve deep sleep, can lead to fatigue, confusion, and sleepiness the next day.

Chronic lack of deep sleep can lead to other health problems down the road, including heart problems, high blood pressure, and a higher risk of stroke, liver problems, and type 2 diabetes.

Data from a National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) study shows that long-term effects from untreated sleep apnea include increases in the risk of heart failure by 140%, stroke by 60%, and the risk of coronary heart disease by 30%. In addition, patients with severe sleep apnea may have a 2-4 times higher risk for complex heart arrhythmias.

Snoring may not seem as deadly, but snoring can disrupt your regular sleep by preventing deep sleep. That means you increase your chances of heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Snoring can also disturb the rest of your sleep partners, putting them at risk, as well.

A Simple Solution: Oral Sleeping Appliance

Dr. Majznerski and Align Orthodontics offer a simple solution to stopping snoring and treating sleep apnea problems.

Align’s oral sleep appliance doesn’t require plastic masks, CPAP machines, or messy breathing strips. Instead, this custom-made sleep appliance is worn in the mouth overnight to reduce or eliminate snoring and sleep apnea.

Dr. Majznerski is an alumnus of the Mayo Clinic School of Residency Post-Doctoral Masters Program. His more than 30 years of experience with Align Orthodontics and his experience as a patient himself put Dr. Majznerski in a unique position to prescribe and create custom oral appliances.

“Being in the dental and oral fields, I took it upon myself to test several oral sleep appliances to alleviate my sleep apnea,” Dr. Majznerski said. “What it boiled down to was finding a sleep medicine solution that is both comfortable and effective.”
