Have you ever thought you wanted braces? For some people, it’s an intimidating thought because where should one start? Many times, the suggestion for braces comes from the dentist. They might direct you to an orthodontist. What do orthodontists do?
An orthodontist is a dentist who specializes in correcting irregularities of the teeth and jaw. They do this by using various devices such as braces, aligners, and retainers. An orthodontist not only corrects an individual’s teeth but also often sits as part of a team that advises on whether an individual would benefit from orthodontic treatment and creates a plan if they do. Orthodontists are responsible for diagnosing and treating patients with dental disorders to straighten their teeth and correct jaw alignment. They also play a crucial role in advising patients on the benefits of wearing corrective devices such as braces or aligners, which are used to gradually move the patient’s teeth into the desired position before beginning any formal treatment.

Basically, orthodontists are trained dentists but go on for specialized education and training, which allows them to do particular work.
Oftentimes a patient comes in as a pre-teen or teenager after having a recommendation from a dentist. These recommendations come because a child may have jaw irregularities or their permanent teeth are coming in crookedly. Through orthodontic treatment, a doctor can align the teeth and jaw to form a beautiful smile that has the form factor and the utility of being able to chew without misalignment or discomfort. A great relief comes from having a smile you like and the pains and aches of misaligned teeth banished by a solid orthodontic treatment plan. Our patients love the results of finishing their treatment plan. You can see some before and after pics here.
Your first appointment is pretty easy and fun. Orthodontists are trained to detect, diagnose, and treat various dental issues. They often do this using tools such as mirrors, cameras, and lasers, along with other diagnostic tools. We’ll do all that, and there won’t be any discomfort. We even have two separate offices here for adults and children. That allows us to tailor the experience to you. Once the issues are clear, we’ll work with the patient to determine the best course of treatment and create a treatment plan. That’s it. That’s the first appointment. You’ll walk out confident that you’ve got a treatment plan that will work.
You may think that your treatment plan is all about brackets and wires, but we want you to know that that’s not all we do here. For instance, your treatment plan may include not brackets and wires but clear aligners instead. We can also use Invisalign to help you get the smile and bite you’re looking for.
We also reshape teeth to get them looking and performing at their best. It doesn’t just serve a cosmetic purpose, either, because many times reshaping is a crucial part of getting your bite just right. You can read more about that here.
Lastly, did you know that an orthodontist can help you with snoring? So many people think that their only treatment option is a CPAP machine whirring away all night long, but that’s not the only option available to you. We have sleep appliances that can help you get a great night’s sleep and be on the road to feeling your best.
